Sydney Trains operates the suburban passenger rail network that serves the Australian city of Sydney, New South Wales. Our Safety Environment Quality Risk (SEQR) team places Sydney Trains’ employees and customers at the center of all that we do. As part of Greater Sydney, SEQR provides Sydney Trains with experienced specialized support and advice regarding safety, environment, heritage & sustainability, risk, health services, and human aspects in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Incident Rail Commander
Sydney Trains has an exciting opening for an Incident Rail Commander to join our Customer Operations division. The Incident Rail Commander is responsible for onsite incident management for Sydney Trains and NSW Trains rail incidents. This position guarantees the effective and timely resolution of operational issues and oversees the implementation of acceptable site safety regulations.
Your primary responsibilities directly report to the Senior Manager of Incident Response and include:
- Respond to and manage all rail network incidents in accordance with the Command and Control system, including post-incident reporting and follow-up.
- Assist the designated rail commander in the handling of substantial and major incidents, crises, and interruptions.
- Identify and address issues that have a direct safety impact on the rail network or have the potential to/will impact train services.
- As required, investigate rail corridor safety issues and lead post-incident recovery and debriefing sessions with all on-site stakeholders.

Incident Rail Commanders are needed to work a 76-hour fortnight, 19-day month, shift work, and weekends. The position requires 24-hour rostering, and you may be forced to perform extended shifts with little notice. This role requires on-call availability.
You are an experienced incident response specialist with good working knowledge and experience of the rail network, as well as experience in the management of train operations using safe working rules and procedures, systems, and safety plans, while operating within an incident management/crisis management framework.
You have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Your meticulousness and fluency in communication will be expected. Safety is your top priority, and you accept a great deal of responsibility while operating under pressure and within strict time limitations.
- Qualified in all systems of safe working (including shunting) and well-versed in emergency protocols (Training may be provided for suitable applicants)
- Qualified as a Level 2 to 4 Protection Officer (Training may be provided for suitable applicants)
- Capability to apply the Rail Safety National Law, Network regulations and procedures under pressure to accomplish the required result within a confined timeframe.
- Extensive leadership experience in a rail operations and/or emergency service environment Proven ability to conduct systematic, thorough, and objective investigations into potential safe working incidents
- Class ‘C’ NSW operational experience within an incident management framework. Valid Driver’s License
